Awards and recognition bestowed upon individuals or organizations for their work in reducing, refining, and/or replacing the use of animals in research or testing.


Björn Ekwall Memorial Award: award presented annually at the Workshop of the Scandinavian Society for Cell Toxicology

CAAT Recognition Award: award presented at each World Congress to honor an individual or organization who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of the 3Rs, the development of alternative methods, or the field of in vitro science

CAAT Henry Spira Award: award to honor the memory of Henry Spira, a pioneer in the animal rights' movement, created to honor animal activists in the animal welfare, protection, or rights' movements who work to achieve progress through dialogue and collaboration; will be awarded every four years

Cefic-LRI Innovative Science Award: €100,000 award presented to an individual for the conception of a novel interdisciplinary research project in toxicology

Dieter Lütticken Award: €20,000 award to scientists and public life-science institutions; for in vitro models for R&D in biologicals and pharmaceuticals being developed for animals

Doerenkamp-Zbinden Award

Dorothy Hegarty Award: annual award presented by FRAME to authors of article published the previous year in the journal Alternatives to Laboratory Animals (ATLA)

Dutch Society for the Protection of Animals (DSPA) Alternatives to Animal Use Award

ECETOC Science Awards: annual award to young scientists established in 2003; format has varied, but objective is to support the safe manufacturing and use of chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and biomaterials through sound science

EPAA: Science award to support development and regulatory acceptance of 3Rs alternative methods; communication prize for translation of technological progress into non-technical language on product innovation and product safety, regulatory requirements, and opportunities and limitations of alternative testing approaches

FISEA: subsidy for alternative research projects without animal experimentation

The Humane Society of the United States Russell and Burch Award: award of $5,000 presented at World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life-Sciences to recognize a scientist who has made outstanding contributions toward the advancement of alternative methods
Level: scientist in biomedical research, testing, or higher education

In Vitro Toxicology Society (IVTS) Student Prizes and Bursaries (affiliated to the British Toxicology Society): poster awards and travel funds for student members

Japanese Society for Alternatives to Animal Experiments (JSAAE) Society Award

Jeanne Marchig Awards: Awards made from the The Marchig Animal Welfare Trust (UK) for: 1) development of an alternative method to experimental procedures and its practical implementation resulting in significant reduction in animals use; or 2) practical work in the field of animal welfare resulting in significant improvements for animals

Johnson & Johnson 3Rs Award: established in 2005 to recognize J&J employees who make a major contribution in advancing the 3Rs' mission

Johnson & Johnson 3Rs Post Doctoral Award: established in 2006 to recognize the importance of focused research in the area of 3Rs and to recognize top scientists who serve as role models

NC3Rs 3Rs Prize: £10,000 award to recognize a published work that advances, or has the potential to advance, knowledge in the 3Rs; sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline

New Zealand National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee "Three R's Award": recognizes an individual or institution for achievements in animal replacement, reduction, and refinement

Nordic Prize for Alternatives to Animal Experiments: annual award to Nordic scientist for research toward replacing animals in experiments; jointly funded by Danish Alternativfondet, Swedish Stifelsen Forskning utan Djurforsok, and Finnish Juliana von Wendts Stifelse

Society for In Vitro Biology (SIVB) awards: various awards including Lifetime Achievement, Fellow, and Young Scientist

Voiceless Eureka Prize for Research that Contributes to Animal Protection: award of $10,000 to Australian citizen or resident

William & Eleanor Cave Award: Alternatives Research & Development Foundation award for achievements in advancing alternatives to the use of animals in research and testing
