EU Legislation & Animal Welfare Oversight

Last updated: July 28, 2014

EU legislation for the welfare and protection of animals is thoroughly covered in the section of the European Commission’s website titled “Animals used for scientific purposes.”

“Animal studies, whether for the development or production of new medicines, for physiological studies, for studying environmental effects or for the testing of chemicals or new food additives, has to be carried out in compliance with EU legislation.”

EU legislation attempts to firmly anchor the principle of the 3Rs (Replace, Reduce, and Refine).
