2016 International Foundation for Ethical Research (IFER) Graduate Fellowship Awards

The International Foundation for Ethical Research (IFER) Board of Directors announced funding for three new Graduate fellowships in October. The new research projects are:

  • T.J. Puls (graduate student) and Dr. Sherry Voytik-Harbin (faculty advisor), Purdue University, Engineering novel 3D tumor-stroma to bridge the gap between preclinical model and human clinical outcomes
  • Danh Truong (graduate student) and Dr. Mehdi Nikkhah (faculty advisor), Arizona State University, Studying the biochemical and biophysical influences of fibroblasts on cancer invasion in a tumor-stroma-on-a-chip
  • Erica L.L. Warkus (graduate student) and Dr. Yusuke Marikawa (faculty advisor), University of Hawaii, In vitro embryoid body morphogenesis to reduce animal usage burdens in teratogenicity testing and pharmaceutical drug development

The Board also approved the renewal of fellowships awarded in prior years:

  • Karen Samy and Dr. Tejal Desai, University of California San Francisco, In vitro 3D flow through system for improved intestinal permeability model
  • Woojung Shin and Dr. Hyun Jung Kim, University of Texas at Austin, Gut inflammation-on-a-chip” for replacing animal models
  • Jean J. Liou and Dr. Rocky Tuan, University of Pittsburgh, Application of human iPSC-derived mesenchymal progenitor cells to dsevelop osteochondral microtissues for osteoarthritis drug testing
  • Georgina Harris, Dr. Lena Smirnova, and Dr. Thomas Hartung, Johns Hopkins University, Identification of pathways of developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) of environmental chemicals by omics technologies
